At The Beach

We drove up to Carpinteria this morning.  We had lunch, went to the beach and visited Ben’s grandmother’s grave.

Betsy loved the sand and the water.  Carson was way more interested in the construction equipment (and his milkshake) that was there.

Then we drove to Ojai, where Kate’s cousins live.  We had Christmas dinner at Betty’s. Bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, carrots and salad.  Everything was wonderful.  Miriam made a beautiful and delicious Santa cake for dessert!  I talked to her a little about her cake decorating, which was fun and encouraging because she’s mostly self taught.  She and Paul have two girls, Gwen and Morgan, who are 4 and 2.  Carson had a good time with them.

We drove home and got back a little after 9.  Even though Betsy did cry near the end, it was a pretty easy drive home and once we got all of her sleeping stuff set up she went right to bed.

Kate went to Chris’s to prep some stuff for tomorrow, and I worked on some sides here at the house.  It’s hard cooking in a vacation home, and really any kitchen that’s not your own.  Things just aren’t where they should be, pans don’t fit in the oven, you have no clue where stuff is, and you’re forced to buy a bag of flour when all you need is 3 cups.  But all things considered we’re doing a pretty good job.  Thankfully Kate thinks ahead and has done a great job of getting our food situation figured out!  I’m pretty sure none of us would be enjoying Christmas dinner without her :)
